Dear Miss Kingston
COMPUTER DRIVEN CARS
Thank you for letter of 21 September 1997 to the Deputy Prime Minister, concerning the use
of computer driven cars. I have been asked to reply. Please accept my apologies for the delay in
replying.
Thank you for your suggestion of the use of computer driven cars. You should be pleased to know
that the Department is carrying out a fundamental review of transport which will identify
both the short and long term actions we need to deliver an integrated transport policy that will
meet the environmental and transport needs of this country for today and for the future. As part of
this review a consultation document entitled "Developing an Integrated Transport System" was
issued. One of the points the Department was particularly keen to receive comments on concerned
the encouragement of environmentally-friendly vehicles and fuels and the development of less
environmentally damaging technologies.
The period for responses to the consultation document has now elapsed and all comments received
are being analysed. I hope that this information is of help to you and please be assured that the
Department is aware of the benefits of environmentally friendly vehicles.
Yours sincerely
Miss Alison Alleyne
